Synthesis and Characterisation of Compounds of Pharmacological Importance A 1200-1CHMSZFAL6
Students will work individually. On the basis of literature provided by the teacher, the student will prepare a work plan and carry out a few-step synthesis of a compound of pharmacological importance. Obtained products will be analyzed, among others, by thin layer chromatography and purified by standard laboratory techniques. The structure of the final product will be confirmed by available analytical and spectroscopic techniques. The final stage will be to develop the characteristics of the obtained compound, including information on its activity, principle of action, applications, based on independently found sources.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student:
- understands the importance of carefully planning an experiment, observing and controlling its progress, and keeping current laboratory notes
- can skilfully plan laboratory work and adjust the amount of activities to the working time
- can perform the synthesis of a selected organic compound and can isolate and purify the products obtained;
- can perform identification of selected organic and bioorganic compounds using appropriate chemical, chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques
- is able to acquire knowledge independently and prepare a characterization study of the compound using various sources (written and electronic) including foreign language;
- is aware of the hazards in the organic chemistry laboratory and works in accordance with the principles of occupational safety and health.
Assessment criteria
The final grade consists of partial grades on:
- a preliminary test for an assigned preparation;
- synthesis of an organic compound and laboratory notes;
- the characterization of the obtained compound of pharmacological significance on the basis of independently found information;
- report discussion.
