Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Laboratory A 1200-1CHMLBIOA4
Students will perform exercises including isolation, purification and quantitative determination of proteins, determination of enzymatic activity and determination of kinetic parameters of selected enzymes, preparation of competent cells, transformation of plasmid DNA, its isolation, preparative PCR, preparation of DNA for sequencing and ligation of DNA into a plasmid vector. The course includes 6 exercises.
During the proseminar classes, methods of working with proteins and enzymes (isolation, purification), methods of their quatitative determination, enzymes used in molecular biology and ideological foundations (with particular emphasis on chemical aspects) of basic methods of molecular biology (including sequencing, PCR, electrophoresis )will be discussed

Learning outcomes
The student knows:
- basic chemical components of living organisms, their structural features, chemical properties and role in biological processes, knows and understands the relationship between the structure of biomolecules and their function.
-basic aspects of the construction and operation of modern measuring apparatus supporting scientific research in chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology.
- safety rules sufficient to work in a chemical, biochemical and molecular biology laboratory
The student can:
- identify selected organic and bioorganic compounds using chemical, biochemical and molecular biology, chromatographic and spectroscopic biology techniques
- design, assemble and use selected measuring equipment and use various measuring systems.
The student has the ability to plan and perform basic research, experiments, observations and computer simulations in the field of chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology, as well as a critical assessment of their own results and discussion of measurement errors.
Assessment criteria
Class attendance (laboratories and proseminars) is compulsory. The student may have a maximum of two overdue exercises resulting from excused absence or non-admission to perform the exercise. Catching up overdue exercises takes place on dates agreed with instructors. Additional classes are also included in the schedule.
Assessment and credit methods:
1)Laboratory: each exercise - 10 points (admission test- 5 points and report - 5 points). You can get 60 points in total.
2) Final test 40 points. To pass the test, it is necessary to obtain 60% of the points. It is also a condition for passing the classes. In case of obtaining a smaller number of points, one should take a retake test in the session. Failure to obtain a minimum of 60% of points will result in failure of the Laboratory in biochemistry and molecular biology.
3) A total of 100 points can be obtained from the laboratory exercises and the test.
To pass the course, you must obtain a minimum of 60 points.
