The course covers such topics as: the first native Americans and their culture, the discovery of America, Virginian and Puritan settlements, The American Revolution, The Constitution, the Frontier West, the North, the South, the Civil War, the nineteenth century and after; Monroe's Doctrine and Roosevelt's Corollary, industry and economy, immigration, America in World War I, the Great Depression and the New Deal, America in World War II, McCarthyism, the presidencies of Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon, The Cold War, Korean and Vietnam Wars, recent events.
In this course emphasis is put on such issues as the shaping of the American mind, basic American values, Puritan heritage, Frontier heritage, American myths, stereotypes and icons.
The aim of this part of the course is to give the students a good sense of history as a process, which sensitises them to the significance of cause and effect relations, and to develop their competence in independent and critical thinking. Apart from the personal academic development of the trainees, another aim of the course is to direct their attention toward the possibilities of using elements of American history and culture in their future teaching career.
