Economics of Migration 3700-MSNS-23-EOM
The aim of this course is to present and discuss a wide range of issues related to the international mobility of people, mainly from an economic perspective (e.g. using tools provided by modern economics). Migration - or mobility in a broader sense - is one of the most important features of the modern world. All regions experience more or less intensive migration flows in their various forms, ranging from settlement and labour migration to transit migration and forced migration of refugees and asylum seekers. Meanwhile, migration has become a structural component of the labour markets of most developed countries and a subject of interest to scholars from a variety of fields, including economics, sociology and political science. The importance of migration has been vividly demonstrated by the recent refugee/migration crises. However, mobility issues are increasingly discussed in the context of fundamental long-term processes (e.g. migration and demographic ageing, migration and socio-economic development).
The course will focus on the economic dimension and approaches to international migration, especially on modelling migratory phenomena. Emphasis is placed on labour migration, but students should try interpreting other forms of migration and mobility using methods of economic analysis.
