Culture and Language Class: Spanish for Beginners 3700-ISSC-23-CLCSB
The course aims to introduce students to the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Spanish at the A1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The cultural component of the course familiarizes students with the historical and social context of the Spanish language and culture. By exploring different regions and traditions of Spain, the course aims to enhance students' ability to express themselves accurately in Spanish, considering the diverse sociolinguistic aspects of the language.

Knowledge.
Student:
Demonstrates basic understanding of Spanish culture and its relevance within a broader context (K_W01)
Recognizes basic historical and cultural connections between Spain and other European countries (K_W03)
Possesses introductory knowledge of Spanish culture and language (K_W10)
Understands selected cultural texts written in Spanish at a basic level, including excerpts from scientific papers, with the assistance of a teacher or dictionaries. Additionally, is able to produce basic analytical texts in a foreign language with guidance (K_W11)
Abilities
Student:
Can present their individual and group academic work in a simple and clear way: using basic Spanish to express ideas and opinions, both in writing and speaking (such as giving a talk or participating in a discussion). Also, understands and follows basic ethical guidelines, including those related to copyrights. Is familiar with the basic rules for using information sources, including digital sources (K_U06)
Can use Spanish at an A2 level, including basic academic contexts (K_U09)
Is able to plan and implement the process of her/his own development and learning as well as to direct the learning process of others through planning team work (K_U10)
Social competences
Student:
Demonstrates a willingness to engage in continuous learning and, based on their experience in learning a new language, understands the importance of perseverance, practice, and ongoing development (K_K01)
Makes informed decisions about selecting the most suitable resources, techniques, or strategies to successfully complete the assigned or specified tasks. (K_K04)

Continuous assessment:
- Preparation for the classes
- Activity in class
- Home assignments
- Control tests
- Oral presentations
Up to 4 absences are permitted. If a student has 2 consecutive absences, he or she must obtain credit for the missed sessions during the professor's tutorial time. Further absences beyond the allowed limit may result in failing the course.
