Elective course- Global Englishes 3223-AMMS-EC-GE
The aim of this course is to examine the diversity of English as a global language by focusing on the concept of world Englishes and the wide range of linguistic varieties spoken around the world.
The course will explore the historical and sociolinguistic factors that have contributed to the emergence of distinct Englishes in different regions, including postcolonial contexts and globalized urban centers. Students will analyze phonological, lexical, and syntactic features of selected English varieties, with
attention to both native and non-native contexts. The course will encourage critical reflection on issues such as linguistic legitimacy, standard language ideology, and the sociopolitical implications of recognizing multiple English norms. Through case studies and comparative analysis, students will gain insight into how English is shaped by local cultures and identities.
By the end of the course, students will have developed a deeper understanding of English as a plural and dynamic language, and will be able to evaluate the implications of this diversity for language teaching, communication, and global interaction.
