Introduction to Classical Islamic Culture 3105-ICIC-OG

An introductory course offering an overview of the main problems of the culture of classical Islam. The emphasis is put on a thematic division of discussed question, rather than on a chronological outline of the history of classical Islam. Due to the introductory nature of this course, discussion will focus on the Arab world, but references to other cultural regions of the classical Islamic world will be made where relevant. One of the principal themes of the course will be making the link between the classical and the contemporary Islamic worlds, in other words, proving the relevance of the classical Islamic culture to the world we live in.
This course will essentially be a lecture, but students’ active participation (questions, discussion) is vividly encouraged.
