Classicism in Polish Architecture, 1750-1850: Form and Ideology 3105-CPA-K
The course examines the architectural history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth’s territory between 1750 and 1850 by focusing on the classical idiom which dominated in the contemporary architectural culture. It illuminates the problem of direct relationship between architectural practice and the ideological agenda embraced by its patrons. The political framing of classicism as a form of symbolic representation are of particular interest throughout the course which covers the period marked by a profoundly dynamic and eventful political situation. We are going to study not only buildings themselves but also texts, prints, drawings as well as gardens.
