In and Out of Africa. Religious Practices in Motion 3102-FIOA
Dr hab. Piotr Cichocki (University of Warsaw, Poland)
Prof. Agnieszka Kedzierska Manzon (École pratique des hautes études - PSL, France)
Dr hab. Anna Niedzwiedz, prof. UJ (Jagiellonian University, Poland)
Tuesdays 16h-19h (European time/Poland/France)
The webinar focuses on African religious practices and imaginaries, understood not with the focus on any single distinct religious tradition, but through the lens of movement, change, and
circulation of objects, subjects, concepts, embodied modes of action and technologies. We will discuss perspectives and research projects that problematize the religious practices as
modern phenomena. Furthermore, we will reflect on the continuity between the material, mediated, and digital and the spiritual, and their complex historical entanglement . Some of
the sessions will pertain to the connections and encounters between African, Asian, and European religious institutions and traditions; attending to the colonial missionary ethnographies but also to the long-standing presence on the continent of the Islamic thought and scholars. Other sessions will discuss the current efforts to reclaim African identity and spirituality via renewal of the practices presented locally as indigenous or ancestral, their
references to variously conceptualized ‘heritage(s)’ as well as their transformations in the context of the global rise of indigenous and back-to-the sources movements and explore
hybrid and evolving African religious soundscapes. Insisting on circulations and movement of imaginaries and practices we aim to fully acknowledge, and reflect on the interconnectedness
of African religious societies and peoples.
