Elective Course. Sport and Games in the Ancient Greek World 2900-HAMC-SGAGW
During the lecture, students will be introduced to basic information about ancient sport, how it differed from our ideas about sporting achievement, especially in terms of language and sports infrastructure. During introductory meetings, the Panhellenic and local games will be discussed.
The issues of amateurism and professionalism in ancient sport will be addressed, as well as the evolution of the sporting community in Greece and the emergence of sporting corporations.
During the course a selection of loci in Greek and Roman authors (i.a.: Homer, Iliad XXIII; Pausanias, V 7-8 and X 7; Apollonios Brill’s New Jacoby 403 F1; Anonymous Olympiad Chronicle, Brill’s New Jacoby 257a; Tertullian ad Martyres) and inscriptions will be addressed and commented with reference to the original texts (i.a.: IG I3 131; Rhodes & Osborne, GHI 80 = BNJ 124 T 23; SEG 56 (2006) 1359; Iscrizioni Agonistiche Greche 63 = Syll.3 802)

Efekty kształcenia
Having completed this course students are expected to:
- analyse information about ancient sport and elated fact critically;
- identify traces of the ancient sport life in the present times;
- understand some basic terms related to ancient Greek sports (e.g. agon, agonistics, athlete, gymnastic, gymnasium, period, crowned games, pancratium, stadium, dolichus, diaulus, pale, palestra, isolympia, Panathenaic vases);
- be acquainted with the most famous athletes of the Antiquity (e.g. Milo of Croton, Poulydamas of Scotussa, Astylus of Croton).
