Elective course. Late Antique Art of the Mediterranean World 2900-HAMC-LAART
This 15-hour course explores the visual arts of the late antique Mediterranean region from the third to eighth centuries CE, with the emphasis on the Eastern Mediterranean. It traces the intricate visual dialogues between polytheists, Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, and Muslims in the Mediterranean in Late Antiquity and surveys late Roman, early Christian, Coptic, Jewish, Persian, and Islamic art in the transregional prespective. To overcome the center-periphery paradigm in history and art history, we will focus not only on empires (Roman, Byzantine, Sasanian, and Umayyad), but also on often marginalized minority cultures, like Coptic, Samaritan, Aramean, and Syrian. The module overviews recent turns in humanities, such as „global turn” in history as well as visual, spatial, performative, and material turns in art history and Mediterranean archeology. It offers an investigation of the transformation between classical antiquity and the medieval period through examination of late antique urbanism, religious and secular buildings, images and artifacts of the Mediterranean. The course also dedicates special attention to the so-called "minor arts, i.e. the many variations of small-scale artwork and decorated objects, beside "major" art such as architecture, sculpture, and painting. We look too at late antique texts on art, objects, space, and viewership. No prerequisites, except for the knowledge of English
