Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages: History and Archaeology 2800-DWEAST-OG

The aim of the course is to review the main trends in the history of the peoples of Eastern Europe in the early Middle Ages and the reflection of the most important processes of social development in the materials of archaeological research and written sources.
The course will cover the history and material culture of the sedentary peoples of the forest zone of Eastern Europe and the nomads of the Eastern European steppes. The focus is on such key issues in the history of the Eastern European region as the emergence and settlement of the Slavs, the formation of the first early medieval states, the spread of monotheistic religions and their correlation with the traditional religious beliefs of the local population, the interaction between nomadic and sedentary peoples, the Mongol invasion of Eastern Europe.
