M1 - Developing teaching skills 2300-GPTE-M1-DTS
The course aims to equip the students preparing to be teachers of English to young learners with the broad view of language learning and teaching. This involves discussing the most important theories of language acquisition, approaches to teaching foreign languages and the techniques involved in adopting each of them, the overview of the content of teaching English as a foreign language as well as the background knowledge for developing classroom skills necessary in everyday practice.

Finishing the course, the student knows
• the basic concepts and terminology of ELT
• the basic methods and approaches used in ELT, with particular focus on their use in teaching young learners
• the content of ELT (language systems and skills)
• the common techniques used in teaching and practising the elements of language and the language skills
• the rules of using teaching materials
• the most important questions and ideas within class management
• the basic structures involved in planning lessons and syllabuses
• the rules and options of error correction
• the most important questions of assessment in ELT
• the available teacher’s resources for classroom use and professional development
The student is able to
• share information and ideas concerning ELT using proper terminology
• select elements of different language teaching methods which are appropriate in the particular teaching context
• select and adapt activities appropriate to the particular teaching point
• select and adapt teaching materials
• plan a lesson and a sequence of lessons
• plan the decisions involved in class management
• effectively adapt to the classroom situation to ensure students’ learning
• prevent discipline problems and conduct effective discipline interventions if necessary
• select and apply appropriate error correction techniques
• plan and conduct assessment of learners’ work
• use the teacher’s resources and methodology handbooks to support their practice
The student is ready to
• analyse other teachers’ work during practicum
• analyse his/her own work and assess its effectiveness
• reflect on their work
• adapt his/her teaching techniques to the needs of his/her learners
• use a variety of ways to solve classroom problems
• make persistent effort to teach effectively
