Conflict management and resolving dilemmas in multicultural groups 2300-AE-CaME-CM
The course is aimed at developing knowledge and skills useful in
effective and sensitive dealing with conflicts and resolving dilemmas
in culturally diverse groups. Through interactive workshops based on
active methods such as case studies, individual and subgroup work,
presentations and discussions, reflection on real-life experiences and
practical exercises including role-play and educational games the
participants will build awareness concerning the impact of culture on
communication and conflict management, as well as ways of
developing understanding and cooperation in multicultural groups.
Participants will explore different communication styles and
approaches to conflict and will learn to identify sources of
misunderstandings as well as methods of building cooperation in
multicultural groups. The course, apart from its practical aspects, will
be well grounded in theory and social science literature.
Topics covered throughout the course include:
- culturally diverse communication styles and approaches to
conflict
- introduction to the basics of conflict theory and conflict dynamics
- identifying sources of misunderstandings in multicultural groups
- basic conditions and principles of dealing with conflicts and
resolving dilemmas in multicultural groups
- culturally sensitive group contracts and ground rules for
managing cultural diversity and dealing with differences
- elements of the mediation process and restorative dialogue

Kryteria oceniania
Requirements to achieve credit:
- active participation in class activities – both individual and
groupwork 50%
- final presentation 50%
A maximum of two absences in class meetings is allowed.
