Philanthropy and International Organisations in global and regional perspective : reinventing social leaderships and global governance 2100-MON-PHIL-OG

Course has two parts/sessions: 12.15, Mondays (in person and / or in ZOOM) - 10 meetings in toral and 14.15 (optionary - additional meetings for interested students , the recordings will be sent to students). Number of places: in person: 20 students; online: no limits

Will be held online (via Zoom) with possibilities to come to the Cavity classroom equipped with computers.

Formula: interactive lectures and workshops, with professionals from United Nations as well as academics and NGOs/

The course is conducted by The University of Warsaw with cooperation with the University of Geneva scholars and students.

The main goal of the course is to familiarize students with the concept of major Philanthropic Foundations with global role as Bill Gates Foundation, Rockefeller ctr, and their place at United Nations System and how this alliance affects the global governance dynamic - in another words the philanthropy from the perspective of international organizations.

The course is a preparatory course that provides an introduction to the subject, no prior knowledge is required.

The subjects are open separately at the University of Warsaw and the University of Geneva, but a significant part of the classes is held jointly.

Over the past two decades, philanthropy has become an increasingly important part of our society. In view of the challenges we face, philanthropy plays an important role in contributing to overall progress and achieving the outcomes indicated in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), among others.

The course is divided into two parts - a theory and a workshop.

During the theoretical part, students will have the opportunity to learn about the concept of philanthropy (operationalization and conceptualization), its opportunities and challenges.

During the practical part, students will learn about the internal workings of organisations and those responsible for coordinating global and local development programmes (classes with practitioners).

The course offers a holistic view of aid, social development and aims to build the attitude of a socially responsible person.

Dates: mid-September to 19 December - Monday 10.15-12.00. Lectures and workshops will be recorded for students unable to attend and posted on the closed profile/website of the course.

Invited practitioners will include experts from international organizations.

Course mode: hybrid: online (Zoom) and in the classroom - classes together with students from the University of Geneva (instructor: from the side of the UW: dr Anita Budziszewska, from the side of the University of Geneva: prof. Giuseppe Ugazio)

Number of places: due to the workshop formula limited - max. 20 places. A detailed syllabus with biographies of experts from international organizations will be sent to students registered for the course.

Course credit: Teamwork/final project in mixed groups, in which students will determine a strategy for a new (self-invented) philanthropic organization engaging in a current social problem of their choice.
