The following topics will be discussed during the course:
1. What is intra-party democracy (IPD)? Participation, competition, deliberation, accountability, and inclusiveness.
2. Party organization theory. Varieties of political parties: mass parties, catch-all parties, cartel parties, and social movement parties.
3. History of IPD.
4. Regulation of intra-party democracy in legislation.
5. Leadership and candidates’ selection methods.
6. The role of the party members vs. the party elite.
7. Democratic decision-making process: policy formulation inside parties.
8. Leader-centrism in Intra-party democracy.
9. Populism and IPD: connected concepts?
10. The Relationship Between Election Systems and IPD.
11. The Relationship Between Government Systems and IPD.
12. Digital Platforms & E-Democracy Inside Parties.
13. IPD and electoral performance: pros and cons of enhanced intra-party democracy.
14. Students’ presentations.
15. Concluding remarks: measuring intra-party democracy: comparative analysis of IPD.
