Foreign Policy of the United Kingdom 2100-ERASMUS-FPUK
1. Introduction: The introduction to the course – the basic conceptual apparatus of
foreign policy analysis – external and internal determinants of the United Kingdom’s
foreign policy.
2. The Collapse of the British Empire and the Creation of the Commonwealth: The
British Empire at the end of World War II – national liberation movements in British
colonies – the transition from British Empire to Commonwealth – the legal basis of
the Commonwealth – the evolution of the competences and importance of this
organisation and its significance in the foreign policy of the UK.
3. The UK at the United Nations and NATO: The UK as an original signatory to the
Atlantic Charter and a founding member of the UN – the UK as a permanent member
of the UN Security Council – the UK in NATO – the UK’s concept of the Atlantic
Triangle.
4. The UK and European Integration: British concepts of European integration after
World War I and II – reasons for initial non-involvement in the EEC and ECSC –
relations between the UK and the European Communities – the UK in the European
Union (key issues).
5. The UK’s Special Relationship with the United States: Roots of special relations –
bilateral cooperation – cooperation at the multilateral level.
6. The UK’s Relations with Former Dominions: Australia, New Zealand and
Canada: The UK-Australia relations (key issues) – the UK-New Zealand relations
(key issues) – the UK-Canada relations (key issues).
7. The UK in the War on Terror – Afghanistan and Iraq: Domestic conditions for
the UK’s involvement in counter-terrorism activities – the UK’s involvement in Gulf
Wars and the controversy regarding the 2003 invasion of Iraq – the UK’s involvement
in Afghanistan since 2001.
8. Brexit: Origins, Process, and Consequences for the UK’s Foreign Policy:
Domestic and foreign determinants of Brexit – the process of leaving the European
Union – developing post-Brexit Global Britain strategy.
9. Global Britain in Practice – the UK Engagement in the Indo-Pacific Region:
Determinants of the UK’ involvement in the Indo-Pacific – political, economic and
military activity of the UK in the region.
10. The UK’s Soft Power in Foreign Policy: The UK’ soft power resources – British
public diplomacy – the monarch in the UK’s foreign policy (evolution of competences
of the monarch, the role of other members of the royal family).

Students:
a) know and understand the basic facts and processes of the UK’s foreign policy,
b) sees cause-and-effect relationships in the evolution of this policy,
c) formulate their own assessment using logical arguments in discussions about the
UK’s foreign policy.

Class Participation: 20%
Attendance: 10 %
