Colonial and Post-Colonial British History and Culture 2100-ERASMUS-CPBH
The Colonial and Post-Colonial British History and Culture course provides examination of the rise, transformation, and legacy of the British Empire. It traces the historical development of British colonial expansion from the early modern period through to decolonization in the 20th century and explores the cultural, political, and economic impacts of empire on both colonized regions and Britain itself.
Through case studies including British rule in India, Canada, Australia, and Africa, students investigate the motivations behind colonization, systems of governance, resistance movements, and the cultural encounters between British settlers and indigenous populations. The course also critically explores how the end of empire reshaped global relationships and contributed to post-colonial identities and tensions. Attention is given to ideological justifications of empire, the role of commerce and industrialization, the cultural dimensions of imperialism, and how colonial narratives continue to influence British identity, immigration debates, and race relations today. By engaging with a wide range of historical sources, students will gain understanding of both the complexities of empire and its ongoing influence in the contemporary world.
