Specialization Laboratory 1 - Organic Chemistry and Chemical Technology 1200-2EN-ORTECHLA12M
The topics of specialization exercises are related to the subject of research conducted in the research laboratories of ZChOiTCh. Within the specialization laboratory, students perform selected exercises from the proposed list of topics.
- Organic chemistry tools for synthesis and purification of a drug delivery system.
- Organic chemistry tools for synthesis and physicochemical characteristic of a drug delivery system.
- Synthesis, purification and physicochemical properties of organic semiconductors.
- Thermal analysis of functional materials.
- Determination of size and stability of nanoparticles by DLS method.
- Dynamic Light Scattering application in size detection of molecules and molecular aggregates.
- Nitroxide mediated polymerization.
- Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in preparation of new materials.
- Preparation of the Hoveyda-Grubbs-type catalyst for the olefin metathesis reaction:
[1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolidin-2-ylidene]-dichloro-[(5-nitro-2-propan-2-yloxyphenyl)methylidene]ruthenium(II) complex.
- Ozonolysis of phenantren.
- Asymmetric organic synthesis with a chiral catalyst.
- Determination of kinetic parameters in enzymatic reactions by polarimetric methods.
- Application of microwave radiation in organic synthesis.
- Protein electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel.
- DNA isolation and characterization.
Student workload = 260 hours, including:
- participation in exercises 120 hours
- consultations 10x2=20 hours
- preparation for classes 6x10= 60 hours
- report preparation 6x10=60 hours

KNOWLEDGE: After completing the course, the student knows and understands
K_W01, K_W05, K_W10
- has extensive knowledge of the place of chemistry within the system of exact and natural sciences and its importance for the development of humanity;
- has in-depth knowledge and skills in the selected chemical specialization, allowing them to use the methods and concepts appropriate for this specialization and enabling independent research;
- has a good understanding of current developments in chemistry and the latest scientific discoveries in the chosen area of chemical specialization;
in particular:
- knows modern methods for the synthesis of organic compounds, nanoparticles, compounds with liquid crystalline properties, polymers, chiral catalysts, coordination compounds, including those using microwaves, the Schlenk technique, and high-pressure reactors.
SKILLS: After completing the course, the student will be able to:
K_U03, K_U04, K_U08, K_U13
- apply appropriate research methods, techniques, and tools within a given chemical specialty, necessary to clarify a given problem;
- independently plan and conduct experiments within their chemical specialty;
- possess advanced knowledge and skills enabling the use of professional literature, databases, and other sources of information, as well as the ability to assess the reliability of the information obtained;
- independently acquire knowledge and develop professional skills using various sources (written and electronic), including those in foreign languages;
In particular:
- is able to use modern research and analytical techniques such as GC chromatography, HPLC, thermal analysis (DSC, TG), dynamic light scattering (DLS), UV-Vis spectrophotometry, spectrofluorimetry, polarimetry, SAXS, SAXD, POM, 1H NMR, and FTIR spectroscopy.
SOCIAL COMPETENCES: After completing the course, the student is ready to

- is able to work in a team and is aware of the responsibility for jointly implemented tasks related to teamwork;
- has the ability to organize their own and team work within the framework of joint tasks and projects and critically evaluates their progress; independently undertakes and initiates simple research activities.
Kryteria oceniania
Attendance mandatory. The number of excused absences allowed is 3 classes, which must be made up at a later date. Assessment from the laboratory is the arithmetic mean of assessments from the exercises performed.
