Laser techniques in studies of aerosol and clouds 1103-5`TLWBA
The aim of the course is to introduce, also in practice, modern laser techniques used in studies of atmospheric aerosols and clouds.
A detailed program of lectures will be given at the first meeting.
I will cover at least 10 of following techniques:
Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS)
Cavity Ring-Down spectroscopy (CRD)
Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF)
Photoluminescence (PL)
Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS)
Light Induced Atomic Desorption (LIAD)
Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probing (FSSP)
Cloud Particle Imager (CPI)
Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS)
RAdio Detection And Ranging (RADAR)
Vertical / 3D-Scanning Could radar
LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR)
Aerosol Polarization scattering lidar (APL)
Mie-Raman lidar (MRL)
Fluorescence lidar (FLU)
High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL)
DIfferential Absorption Lidar (DIAL)
Radial Velocity / 3D Scanning Doppler lidar
Scheimpflug lidar
Ocean lidar
The course was initially addressed to graduate students specializing in the field of atmospheric physics and geophysics. However, over the years, it proved to be popular among students from other disciplines. It is also a popular choice for the ERASMUS students and a frequent choice of PhD candidates. The students within 4EU+ Alliance are welcome.
Having a basic knowledge of the atmospheric physics will be an asset to students, although it is not necessary to understand the majority of the lectures.
The estimated student workload is following:
- participation in lectures: 20h
- practical training: 10h (one-to-one sessions)
- written report on results and practical work performed by the student: 20h
- preparation for the exam: 10h

Efekty kształcenia
This course will provide students with following learning outcomes, according to thedocumentation provided in following documentation: Efekty kształcenia zg. z charakterystyką II stopnia Polskiej Ramy Kwalifikacji dla kwalifikacji uzyskiwanych w ramach szkolnictwa wyższego – poziom 6-8 (http://www.kwalifikacje.gov.pl/images/Publikacje/Polska-rama-kwalifikacji.pdf)
1. Education / Wiedza: P8S-WG
2. Skills / Umiejętności: P6S-UU, P8S-UK
3 . Social competences / Kompetencje społeczne: P7S-KR, P8S-KK
Kryteria oceniania
An assessment of the final grade will be based on the written report on the results and work conducted by the student during the practical training (50% of the final grade) and on the evaluation of the written exam (50% of the final grade).
The topics for the exam will be given 3 weeks in advance, and will cover the material realized during lectures. During the exam session one written exam and one make-up exam are planned. Attending lectures is recommended, although not obligatory.
The exam is scheduled on 20/06/2024 at 15.30-17.30.
The resit exam is on 05/09/2024 at 15.30-17.30.
Whether the exams will be carried out online or in class will be decided at least 2 weeks before the exam.
NOTE: Passing the exam is not required for doctoral students. Therefore they can either take the exam (and receive the exam mark) or they can receive the credit (passed) for their active and regular participation in classes.
