The Graduate Programme in Political Science is addressed to candidates who hold a Bachelor, Master of Arts or equivalent degree from Poland or from abroad. This is a full-time graduate programme. The language of instruction is English.

The courses offered in the study programme are both theoretical and practical. Our students, besides regular courses, actively participate in the academic life by being members of various political science associations; presenting at conferences, taking part in debates and lectures of distinguished guests from all over the world visiting our university. Social events are also important in students’ everyday lives. The knowledge and skills developed during the studies allow them to win scholarships and awards in different competitions, e.g. for the best foreign students in Poland.

Classes are held from Monday to Friday from 8:00-20:00, mainly at the University of Warsaw's Main Campus, Krakowskie Przedmieście St.

Graduates

Graduates will acquire the intellectual qualifications necessary to analyse political science problems and challenges. Thanks to skill-building activities provided during their classes, they will be well-trained in the art of communication, negotiation and persuasion. Particular emphasis is placed on issues concerning European integration, as well as Poland and Eastern Europe.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: The graduate knows and understands:
- the subject-matter and methodological nature and (social, cultural, economic, as well as sociological
and psychological) circumstances of political activities of individuals from a theoretical and practical
point of view;
- political choices of individuals, also with respect to public authorities, and their interactions with
the social, economic, and political environment, as well as the role and significance of various models
of communication in political life;
- the forms and conditions of institutionalised and non-institutionalised forms of political
participation at various levels, also with respect to individual entrepreneurship;
- legal, social, cultural, economic, and political circumstances surrounding the functioning of
(democratic and non-democratic) political systems and regimes, as well as the circumstances around
the activities of various political actors;
- cultural, economic, and political structures at a deep level, and mechanisms governing the changes
that they undergo;
- the rules governing the functioning of political systems in comparative terms, as well as the
functioning of political organisations and institutions, and social and political mechanisms;
- the strands of research concerning political science, and the main streams of political thought;
- various concepts and theories of politics in comparative terms;
- mechanisms of political action, communication, governance and decision-making, and their
consequences in a diverse timeframe;
- the rules governing intellectual property protection in scientific and practical activities in political
science.

Skills: The graduate is able to:
- critically interpret political and administrative mechanisms at various levels of political life, and
critically and independently assess the distribution of power;
- identify the causes and circumstances behind decision-making processes at various levels, also in
the context of mass and social media, along with the complex functioning of authorities at various
levels of political life;
- notice the practical, historical, and intellectual foundations of various concepts of state, society,
power, governance, and administration, and evaluate their implementation in practical political
activities;
- use systems and norms and show how useful they are in typical and atypical professional situations,
noticing and analysing ethical dilemmas in the public sphere;

- independently gain their knowledge and develop their professional skills, perform tasks innovatively
in diverse conditions, using various sources of knowledge and modern technologies, inspire and
motivate their environment to improve their skills;
- present own ideas, justify them, and confront themselves with the views of other students and
authors, taking into account various strands of theory in political science;
- collect, prioritise, process, and analyse data, as well as draft written works and oral presentations
(including debate moderation) concerning specific topics, with the use of basic theoretical
approaches, various sources, and specialist terminology in a foreign language in line with the
requirements for level B2+ on the scales of the Common European Framework of Reference for
Languages.

Social competences: The graduate is ready to:
- independently and critically update, verify, and implement in practice their (i.a. interdisciplinary)
knowledge, together with sources of scientific and journalistic information, for professional
purposes;
- set priorities for the performance of tasks which they or others set themselves in relation to
educational and professional goals;
- represent in various ways (i.a. in an institutionalised form) the diverse interests of social groups,
considering the legal, economic, and political aspects of the initiatives pursued;
- correctly identify and solve dilemmas (i.a. ethical dilemmas) related to their profession, and
demonstrate involvement in the public sphere;
- think and act in the spirit of entrepreneurship and reliability.
