Marxist Literary Theory 4219-AW234
The aim of the lecture course is to provide literature and culture majors with a systematic knowledge of the seminal philosophical and theoretical texts which situate literary and cultural production in a historical and ideological context. The material is organized in five thematic units:
I. The sources and logic of Marxist discourse — I. Kant, G.W.F. Hegel, K. Marx: dialectics, labour, alienation, commodity fetishism, base and superstructure.
II. Western Marxism and the Frankfurt School — M. Weber, G. Lukács, T. Adorno, M. Horkheimer, W. Benjamin, H. Marcuse, J. Habermas: rationalization, reification, the culture industry, aura and technical reproducibility, the aesthetic dimension, the public sphere.
III. Ideology and hegemony — A. Gramsci, L. Althusser, P. Macherey: hegemony, ideological state apparatuses, interpellation, textual silence and literary production.
IV. Spectacle and sign — G. Debord, J. Baudrillard: the spectacle, the political economy of the sign, sign value.
V. Cultural materialism and Marxist literary criticism — R. Williams, T. Eagleton, F. Jameson, J. Rancière: structures of feeling, culture as a material process, the political unconscious, the distribution of the sensible.
Each lecture introduces the conceptual apparatus of the thinker under discussion, places it in its historical and intellectual context, and demonstrates its operation through the lecturer's analysis of a literary text or cultural phenomenon. The course thus maps the tradition on which a substantial part of contemporary literary and cultural criticism continues to draw and equips students with terminology they can carry into their own research projects.
