Ethnopolitics and indigenous movements in Latin America 4219–SA133
The course has a specialistic character and it undertakes complex problematic of contemporary relations between indigenous population and Latin American states, as well as ethnic policy conducted by those states (and related to legal, systemic, cultural, social and economic issues) towards indigenous peoples.
The course develops questions related, among others, to the definition of indigenousness, international legal frames concerning indigenous peoples, indigenous rights, political systemic reform (constitutional reform, introduction of indigenous autonomies and legal pluralism, new forms of democracy and citizenship, plurinational states etc.), struggle over the ability to decide about indigenous own models of development in the context of social-environmental conflicts and the question of resources control etc.
The course pays special attention to indigenous movements – the main political and social actors engaged in the struggle over the change of ethnic relations in particular states and introducing a new quality in systemic and political relations between the indigenous peoples and states.
The course undertakes, among others, issues of emergence and development of indigenous movements (social movements theory, historical-political context), issue of identity, discourse, strategy of political struggle, demands etc.
The course is based upon an interdisciplinary approach – sociology, political science, anthropology, complemented by a proper and indispensable historical context.

1. From assimilation to re-indianization or brief history of ethnic relations in contemporary Latin America – since the Conquest, through anti-indigenous oligarchic republics to contemporary multicultural and plurinational states
2. Legal, political and socio-economic situation of the indigenous peoples in contemporary Latin American states
3. Nation-states and multicultural, plurinational states; universalism and political inclusion vs ethnic/cultural diversity and special rights
4. citizenship – liberal and indigenous concepts, forms of participation/state-citizen relations
5. Who is indigenous? Question of legal definitions of indigenousness/criteria of recognition, international legal frames and national legislation
6. Emergence and development of indigenous social movements (social movements theories, conjunctural and structural conditioning etc.)
7. Question of identity and indigenous political mobilisation; discourse
8. Demands, aims and strategies of their realisation: self-determination and self-government, autonomies, indigenous politico-administrative models, legal pluralism, territory, resources control, models of development etc.
9. The indigenous in politics – ethnic parties and indigenous movements
10. State reforms, constitutional reforms, legislation concerning indigenous rights
11. Participation of indigenous movements in the institutional/constitutional reforms of state and conditionings and outcomes of that engagement
12. Legal regulations and the question of 'petrification' of political forms and organisational traditions of indigenous peoples
13. Socio-environmental conflicts and indigenous rights

WIEDZA:
- KS_W07 - she/he has detailed knowledge about different kinds of social, cultural, political, legal and economic structures and institutions in Latin America and the Carribean, as well as about rules and norms that regulate them
- KS_W08 - has profound knowledge about the place of an individual in the society, knows kinds of social relations typical for Latin American/Caribbean societies and the rules regulating them
- KS_W11 - she/he has deepen knowledge about processes of change of social and cultural structures and organisations in Latin American and the Carribean, as well as about their elements, reasons, processes, scale and consequences of these changes.
UMIEJĘTNOŚCI:
- KS_U02 - using advanced theories of humanities and social sciences, on the basis of critical analysis of literature of the subject and using the proper methodology, she/he can formulate own conclusions about dynamics of complex social and cultural phenomena in Latin American and the Carribean
- KS_U04 - is able to combine knowledge from different disciplines in order to model and forecast the development of different areas of social and cultural life in Latin American and the Caribbean
- has the ability to give an account of different opinions, using coherent ethical norms and is able to use them in accordance with the recent achievements in the humanities and social sciences in order to develop own approach to solve concrete problems related to cultural and social relations phenomena in Latin America and the Caribbean

After the course the student:
- Understands the role of ideological disputes for the interpretation of social and cultural phenomena ongoing in Latin America and the Caribbean and is able to formulate own position regarding them
- Is able to cooperate and to work in group, assuming different roles
- understands the need for continuous learning, are open to new phenomena and ideas and ready to change their opinions in the face of new data and arguments
