Leftist Movements and Guerrilla in Latin America 4206-FS131z
The course 'Leftis and guerrilla movements in Latin America' overwhelmes problematic of leftist (also guerrilla) movements in Latin America in twentieth and twentyfirst centuries.
The movements, associated mostly with leftist revolutionary movements of the second part of twentieth century, represented different ideological basis, strategies and political objectives.
The objective of this course is to examine the phenomenon in its general scope and to study characteristics of particular examples of guerrilla in the second part of twentieth century. The students will know the examples of marxist guerrilla movements (e.g. 'Che' in Bolivia, Colombian FARC, maoist Shining Path in Peru), prodemocratic guerrillas (Colombian M-19), urban guerrilla (the Tupamaros in Uruguay) and so called 'new guerrillas' (Zapatistas in Mexico).
The study of particular movements will consist in examining the ideological base, strategy, political objectives, operating actions, political context and social reality of given country and time.
During the course the following examples of leftist and guerrilla movements will be discussed:
- Victor Haya de la Torre's APRA, Jose Carlos Mariategui in Peru
- The Sandinista in Nicaragua
- New Latin American Left - e.g. Hugo Chavez in Venezuela, MAS in Bolivia, Lula in Brasil, Alianza PAIS in Ecuador, Frente Amplio in Uruguay
- The peronism in Argentina
- The Cuban Revolution
- Che Guevara in Bolivia
- Tupamaros - urban guerilla in Uruguay
- FARC and ELN in Colombia
- FALN in Venezuela
- M-19 in Colombia
- Shining Path in Peru
-- The Zapatistas in Mexico
As a summary of the course, the actual situation and strain of guerilla phenomenon in the first decade of twentyfirst century will be presented.

have general knowledge of Latin American guerrilla warfare
know and understand the idea of guerrilla in Latin America in the course of history
recognize the current classifiaction of historical and modern partisan movements in Latin America
be able to assess the effectiveness of Latin American guerrillas' projects and its future perspectives
understand the particularity of guerrilla military organizations and their variety which depends on the conditions in the countries of their acticity
