French literature for language teachers 4100-6SLFJDNJ
The seminar aims to present the issues of including literature in the glottodidactic process (in teaching French). General issues will be discussed, such as the definition of literature, the role of literature in education, literary texts and other materials. with literature, criteria for selecting this type of materials, the type of exercises that can be offered to foreign language learners, the possibility of developing language skills and cultural competences while working with literature in a language class.
Selected literary genres will be discussed in more detail – fable, fairy tale and short story, which, due to their specific features, enable optimal use in the language classroom:
- fable: history and characteristics of the genre (ancient origin), animal characters, didacticism and elements of satire, universal meaning of the fable, the status of the fable in the process of teaching a foreign language, suggestions for exercises
- fairy tale: history and characteristics of the genre (folk sources, oral traditions), wonder and universal and intercultural significance of fairy tales, constant elements of structure and content (beginning and ending formulas, rehearsals, magical items), suggestions for use in learning French
- short story (its various types), basic features of the short story genre, structure (climax), thematic and formal diversity, the concept of science fiction, the main determinants of fantasy literature, an indication of the usefulness of using the short story as a material for teaching a foreign language.
Student workload:
– 30 hours of participation in a seminar (contact),
– 30 hours of own work (preparation of activities/exercises for students to use in FLE classes based on materials used in classes, work necessary to achieve the expected learning outcomes).

Knowledge: the graduate knows and understands
S_W01 : to an advanced degree selected facts, theories, institutions, processes, and phenomena related to the study areas: llinguistics, literary studies, relevant to the field of studies - teaching foreign languages which have practical application in teaching foreign languages in kindergartens and at the first and second educational stages.
S_W02: the necessary terminology related to: linguistics, literary studies, relevant to teaching foreign languages.
Skills: the graduate is able to
- S_U01:search, analyse, evaluate, select and use information, using a variety of sources and methods, in Polish and in French .
- S_U02: plan and implement projects typical for foreign language teaching environments (including preschool)
- S_09: analyse their own actions and identify possible areas for change in the future.
- S_U15: speak and write consistently and precisely in Polish and in a foreign language on topics related to selected educational matters, applying different theoretical approaches and using findings from academic disciplines relevant to their course of studies.
Social competences: the graduate is prepared to
- S_K02: reflect on the level of their skills and knowledge, constantly develop professionally and personally,self-assess their competences, improve their skills, plan their development and training
- S_K03: take responsibility for the promotion and preservation of the cultural heritage of the region, country and Europe;
- S_K05: interact and work in a group, performing various roles
Assessment criteria
Passing the seminar based on:
- attendance (four absences allowed per semester, including a maximum of two unexcused),
- regular work in classes at least at a sufficient level
passing the classes (minimum requirements) and final grade based on:
- regular work in classes at least at a sufficient level (S_U01, S_U02, S_U09, S_U15, S_K02, S_K03, S_K05): 33.33% of the final grade
- regular (for each class) preparation, based on literary texts, of exercises for students to use during FLE classes (overall assessment of all tasks presented by the student - at the end of the semester) (S_U01, S_U02, S_U09, S_U15, S_W01, S_W02): 33.33% of the final grade
- final passing test (test based on the material discussed during classes) (S_W01, S_W02) : 33.33% of the final grade
Four absences per semester are allowed (including a maximum of two unexcused absences); exceeding this limit results in failing the classes and having to repeat them.
