English language teaching for upper primary school 4100-5SDPIIEE
The aim of the course is to equip students with theoretical knowledge, skills, and social competencies necessary for the profession of an English language teacher at the second level of primary school education (grades 4-8). Students learn methods and techniques needed for developing and evaluating individual language skills of students (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) and for teaching grammar and vocabulary in English. They familiarize themselves with the developmental characteristics of students aged 10-14, basic principles of memory functioning, ways of arousing interest and motivating students. They learn to critically assess, select, and create their own teaching materials tailored to the age and level of students at this educational level. They practice practical teacher skills, such as planning stages of a language lesson, maintaining discipline in the classroom, giving instructions, providing feedback, and correcting students’ language errors.

Assessment criteria
Semester I
Obtaining the credit
Attendance at classes (a maximum of two absences per semester is allowed) and the timely completion of all partial tasks assigned both during in-person sessions and on the e-learning platform are required in order to qualify for course credit.
The final grade is determined based on the results obtained according to the adopted methods and assessment criteria, in line with the specified weightings.
The use of AI tools and technologies supporting language processing is permitted only with the lecturer’s consent and after prior approval of the scope of their application.
Using such tools without the lecturer’s consent and prior agreement will be treated as a violation of the principles of independent work — resulting in the work being considered non-independent and graded as unsatisfactory.
Assessment Methods
1. Preparation for classes (15%) – knowledge of topics covered in previous sessions, familiarity with materials provided on the e-learning platform for self-study (K_W01 K_W03 K_W04 K_W06 K_W08 K_W09 K_W10).
2. Active participation in classes (15%) – participation in group forum discussions, active involvement in tasks carried out in smaller groups (simulations or didactic exercise projects) (K_U02 K_U03 K_U05 K_U06 K_U07 K_U08 K_U10 K_U12 K_U19 K_U20 K_U23 K_K05 K_K06 K_K07 K_K09 K_K10).
3. Written test (70%) – a test assessing knowledge of foreign language teaching methodology (K_W01 K_W03 K_W04 K_W06 K_W08 K_W09 K_W10).
Assessment Criteria and Weighting
1. Preparation for classes (15 points)
- ability to recall in relatively detailed form the information presented in earlier sessions and in self-study materials, as well as to synthesize/critically analyze them in written or oral form.
2. Active participation in classes (15 points)
- frequency and relevance of contributions in group forum discussions,
- appropriateness of applying theoretical knowledge when designing and carrying out didactic tasks in groups, creativity, and engagement.
3. Written test (70%)
- accuracy of answers reflecting acquired knowledge.
