History and culture of French speaking countries for language teachers 4100-2SKHKFDNJO
The aim of the classes is to orient students to the cultural issues of French-speaking countries and to develop the ability to interpret cultural phenomena. The classes are aimed at acquiring the basics of structured knowledge of the history and culture of France and, to a narrower extent, other French-speaking countries and regions. Students will be prepared to independently design French language lessons using materials related to culture. General issues will be discussed, such as the concepts of culture, civilization, stereotypes, as well as the definition of authentic documents, their role in education, the diversity of materials, etc. with culture, criteria for selecting this type of materials, and the type of exercises that can be offered to learners of French. Selected materials and topics will be discussed in more detail, such as regions of France, French-speaking countries and regions, song, painting, culinary art as an element of civilization - in terms of their specific features that enable optimal use in the glottodidactic process:- regiony Francji: podkreślenie różnorodności tematów i materiałów umożliwiających zdobycie wiedzy dot. bogactwa i zróżnicowania Francji;
- French-speaking regions and countries: the concept of Francophonie and its enormous historical and cultural potential;
- song: work with audio and video recordings, classical and contemporary artists, from France and other French-speaking countries;
- painting: working with reproductions and other exercises (e.g. virtual visits to museums) - variety of topics and motifs, classical and contemporary artists, from France and other French-speaking countries;
- culinary art - as an important element of everyday civilization; the possibility of different treatment of the topic - from very practical (kitchen recipes) to cultural (the role of meals in family and social life, specific products and dishes in different periods and occasions).
Student workload:
– 30 hours of participation in a seminar (contact),
– 30 hours of own work

Knowledge: the graduate knows and understands
S_W01 : to an advanced degree selected facts, theories, institutions, processes, and phenomena related to the study areas: literary
studies, culture and religion studies, and history relevant to the field of studies - teaching foreign languages which have practical
application in teaching foreign languages in kindergartens and at the first and second educational stages.
S_W02: the necessary terminology related to: linguistics history, culture and religion studies, relevant to teaching foreign languages.
Skills: the graduate is able to
- S_U01:search, analyse, evaluate, select and use information, using a variety of sources and methods, in Polish and French.
- S_U02: plan and implement projects typical for foreign language teaching environments (including preschool)
- S_U15: speak and write consistently and precisely in Polish and in a foreign language on topics related to selected educational matters,
applying different theoretical approaches and using findings from academic disciplines relevant to their course of studies.
Social competences: the graduate is prepared to
- S_K03: take responsibility for the promotion and preservation of the cultural heritage of the region, country and Europe
Assessment criteria
Passing the seminar based on:
- attendance (4 absences per semester are allowed, regardless of their status, exceeding this limit results in failure to pass the classes)
- preparing for classes and systematically performing homework
- activities during classes (active participation in classes, group work)
- oral presentation (in any form, e.g. PowerPoint) on a selected topic (group work)
Final grade based on:
- activities during classes (participation in discussions, individual and group work) S_U15, S_K03 – 33,33% of the final grade
- presentations S_W01, S_W02, S_U01, S_U02, S_U15 – 33,33% of the final grade
- semester work (students in small groups develop mini lesson plans on a selected topic based on authentic documents - cultural texts) S_W01, S_W02, S_U01, S_U02, S_U15 – 33,33% of the final grade
