ESP in social studies 4100-2SJASDWO
The course covers 30 didactic hours per semester and is conducted in a blended mode:
- 14 hours: in-class meetings, the dates of which are indicated in the timetable available on the CKNJOiEE UW website;
- 16 hours: in an asynchronous mode, on Kampus platform.
Topics covered during three semesters:
SEMESTER 1
- citizenship,
- nationality,
- minority groups,
- patriotism,
- non-governmental organizations.
SEMESTER 2
- international organizations,
- human rights,
- the ombudsman for children's rights,
- juvenile justice system,
- mass media.
SEMESTER 3
- democratic system of the Republic of Poland,
- legislative process,
- the President,
- the Constitution of the Republic of Poland,
- local self-government.
The course ends with an exam after three semesters.
Only students who pass all three semesters of the course are eligible to take part in the exam.
The exam is conducted both in an oral and written form.

Learning outcomes
The graduate knows and understands:
K_W01: to an advanced degree selected facts, theories, institutions, processes, and phenomena related to teaching social studies: politics, administration and public policy studies, which have practical application in teaching foreign languages in kindergartens and at the first and second educational stages.
K_W03: the methods, norms, procedures and standards of practice in educational institutions, related to teaching social studies
K_W09: the methodology to perform common tasks; the standards and procedures used in various educational areas
The graduate is able to:
K_U01: search, analyse, evaluate, select and use information, using a variety of sources and methods, in Polish and English
K_U02: independently plan and implement typical projects related to teaching social studies at the second educational stage
K_U05: observe and assess the suitability of a variety of methods, procedures and best practices, and select and apply the appropriate approach with the goal of accomplishing tasks and solving problems related to teaching social studies
K_U09: analyse their own actions and identify possible areas for change in the future
K_U10: work with children from various cultural backgrounds and those with limited knowledge of the Polish language
K_U12: communicate in Polish and in a foreign language, using a variety of channels and techniques, with all participants in the teaching-learning process and experts in the academic disciplines and subjects that are relevant to the field of studies in foreign language teaching, both in Polish and another language
K_U14: prepare, and deliver in public, oral presentations in Polish and another language, for specific purposes, using basic theoretical approaches, as well as a variety of sources
K_U15: speak and write consistently and precisely in Polish and in a foreign language on topics related to educational matters, applying different theoretical approaches and using findings from other disciplines related to the field of studies
The graduate is prepared to:
K_01: pursue lifelong learning in the field of social studies
Assessment criteria
Graded coponents:
- in-class vocabulary tests
- tasks performed in class
- tasks and assignments submitted on Kampus platform as part of asynchronous classes
- presentation delivered in class
The grading scale:
90-100% → 5
85-89% → 4,5
75-84% → 4
70-74% → 3,5
60-69% → 3
59%-31% → 2
30%-0% → NK
Minimum required to obtain a positive grade: 60%
Students can be absent only once during the semester.
