The course is carried out over three semesters and covers civic, social, and political issues in English. In the first semester, students get familiar with basic civic terminology and topics related to homeland, society, and citizens’ participation in public life. The second semester focuses on civic, social, and international issues, broadening the scope of the content. In the third semester, the principles of democracy, the Constitution of the Republic of Poland, and the competences of the main state authorities are discussed. All topics form an essential part of preparing for teaching social studies in English.
The course includes 30 teaching hours per semester and is delivered in a blended format:
- 14 hours: on-site, according to the schedule available on the CKNJOiEE website
- 16 hours: asynchronous, on the Kampus platform
Topics discussed in the first semester:
- nationality, citizenship, various faces of patriotism
- national and ethnic minorities
- discrimination
- civic skills and virtues
- non-governmental organizations
- Poles abroad
Topics discussed in the second semester:
- international organizations (i.e. NATO, European Union, UN)
- international courts and tribunals
- Human Rights Ombudsman
- media and advertisements
Topics discussed in the third semester:
- national policy and functioning of the state
- the Sejm and the Senate
- the office of the President
- legislative process
- local self-government
The course ends with an exam after three semesters.
Only students who pass all three semesters of the course are eligible to take part in the exam.
Term 2025Z:

Learning outcomes defined for the specialization
The graduate knows and understands:
S3_W02: the content of the core curriculum of the school subject Social Studies at the lower secondary education level, as well as the typical difficulties students encounter in mastering it.
The graduate is able to:
S3_U02: apply knowledge of the structure and functioning of language to identify common language errors and to improve both their own and students’ language competence in specialized English appropriate for teaching Social Studies.
S3_U03: interpret teaching content covered by the core curriculum of Social Studies at the lower secondary education level in the context of current knowledge within related disciplines.
S3_U04: use specialized English appropriate for teaching Social Studies at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
S3_U05: communicate with others using specialized terminology in English appropriate for teaching Social Studies.
The graduate is ready to:
S3_K01: critically evaluate their own knowledge and the content received within the school subject Social Studies at the lower secondary education level.

Assessment criteria
Course Assessment
Attendance is a prerequisite for passing the course (a maximum of one unexcused absence is allowed), as well as the timely completion of all partial assignments required both during on-site classes and on the Kampus e-learning platform.
The final grade is determined based on the results obtained through the adopted assessment methods, in accordance with the specified weights.
The use of AI tools and language-processing technologies is permitted only with the instructor’s consent and after prior approval of their intended scope of application. Using such tools without the instructor’s consent and prior agreement will be treated as a violation of academic integrity resulting in the work being considered non-independent and graded as unsatisfactory.
