Italian seminar. Basis of Italian culture. 4018-SEM40-CLASS
The seminar will be divided in 2 parts.
The first term will focus on showing the uniqueness of so-called Italian style, including its architecture, music, folklore, art of cookery, fashion and design. We will study visual arts – from history of art (mainly Renaissance) to history of fashion, we will try to understand the phenomenon of Italian food, music and football. We will get to know Italy using all our senses: sound, sight, touch, smell and taste. Our guides will be not only of Italian origin (e.g. Enzo Biagi, Italo Calvino, Umberto Eco, Roberto Saviano), but also those who came to know Italy along with its culture at a certain point of their lives (e.g. Ingeborg Bachmann, Josif Brodski, Jacob Burkhardt, Zbigniew Herbert, Pavel Muratow, John Ruskin). We will study textual traces, together with those connected to music (from Giuseppe Verdi to Fabrizio De André), films (Pier Paolo Pasolini and Federico Fellini), along with architectural, painting and gastronomic trails. Our Italian trip will be organized according to the geography: just like the participants of the famous Grand Tour we will look at Italy from different angles, each city will offer us a different cultural field, a different aspect of culture, a different tradition.
After this thorough analysis of various aspects of Italian culture during the first semester, we will then look at the boot-shaped country from a much wider perspective, i.e. we will study the differences between the North and the South. The anthropology of the Italian South is usually associated with the religious phenomenon of “tarantism” – a ritualized type of cure for nervous disorders, a form of exorcism performed by means of music and dance – studied by an Italian ethnologist and historian of religion Ernesto de Martino (1908-1965). This colorful and undoubtedly fascinating theory constitutes however only one of the faces of the problem – cultural materialism (along with anthropologists following Marvin Harris’ ideas) offers us a new perspective on the culture of the Italian South. While discussing the culture of meridione, we shall not forget about the presence and the evolution of superstitions and pagan beliefs, the vitality of the archetype of the Mother Earth (represented here by Virgin Mary) and the ideas of clanship and mafia. Then we will continue our research in the North by analyzing its two main characteristics: the phenomenon of Lega Nord with all its possible political and social connotations along with Questione di Trieste (this port city that was proclaimed Italian only in 1975 with the Treaty of Osimo). We will also examine the question of “italianity” of the North of Italy and the phenomenon of federalism from the socio-political point of view.
