Legal aspects of relations between humans and animals 4018-KON246-CLASS
The course focuses on the normative aspects of human-animal relations.
The classes will introduce the issue of normativity, including positive law as a means of protecting animals (legal protection), presenting philosophical grounds and views of importance for developing regulations encompassing other species, the issue of an animal’s status within public law and private law, an animal’s status versus animal rights (substantive law, subjective right), and also defining groups of animals under protection. Regulations of international law, European law and Polish national law will be presented.
Further on in the course, the topic of legal protection of animals will be expanded into analyses of the most important individual issues in human-animal relations today: guidelines for humanitarian protection of animals, homelessness of household pets, protection of animals used for scientific purposes, animals used for economic purposes, regulations on slaughter and killing, the special situation of fish, the transport of animals, a new concept of zoological gardens and their role in protecting biological diversity, the problem of animals being used in entertainment, the matter of hunting.
The importance and activity of nongovernmental organisations that aim to help animals will form the final part of the course.
