Enkyklios paideia 4018-KON197-CLASS
William James in his Pragmatism asks as follows: “When may a truth go into cold-storage in the encyclopedia? and when shall it come out for battle?” The question, as it stands, is ill-posed. On one hand encyclopedias are constructions, even mechanisms designed for consolidation of the preserved and passed on contents. On the other hand none encyclopedia is merely a neutral repository
Encyclopedias are perfected for centuries architectonics of various cosmological and metaphysical systems, tools of ideological persuasion, instruments of social practices. They are weapons to fight with for catechisation, against superstitions, arms to be used in proclaiming one’s philosophical system or a world-view. Encyclopedias are not cold-storages of ideas, values or truths but blades to gain them.
During the seminar we will follow the development of encyclopedic genres since antique up to virtual, we will get to know various encyclopedic constructions and closely examine their rhetorics. We will study not only the modes of organising a knowledge but above all else ways of constructing possible universes.
Raymond Queneau in his short paper entitled How have I become an encyclopedist? stated: “A guy who would believe to have a vocation for editing an encyclopedia (…) is insane”. Feel invited for the seminar with madmen touched by the passion of encyclopedic constructing possible worlds, such as Isidore of Seville, Hildegard of Bingen, Benedykt Chmielowski, Marquis de Sade and Hegel. And few others.
Student gains the historical, genological, rhetorical and philosophical knowledge of various knowledge compendiums in the broad sense. Acknowledges a range of ways that knowledge is organized from the earliest systematizations to the twentieth-century. Masters informations about the transformations of the idea and architectonics of “encyclopedia” as a compendium of knowledge – from the Antiquity to the present day; variable motives for creating the encyclopedic compendiums (religious, philosophical, utilitarian); their content and functions in various times and diverse environments.
The objective of this course is to provide students with the up-to-date knowledge of historical and theoretical aspects of the various forms of systematization and presentation of knowledge in terms of encyclopedic compendiums. The course consists of the elements of a lecture (it’s main goal is to bring nearer the history of “encyclopedic genres”) and the seminar (that implies the team- and individual work components). Students master the knowledge of historical, theoretical, philosophical and rhetorical aspects of various historical and formal metamorphoses of the works that represent the encyclopedic genres. Students gain skills that are indispensable for analysis of this particular writing.
