Philosophy of film - Andrei Tarkovsky 4012-054B
The cycle of seminars titled "Philosophy of film" has been designed as a series of discussions on the work of directors who were able to use artistic means to express a mature vision of the world and humankind in that world. We will follow film themes related to existential choices in order to discover the history of the artists' searches. The aim of the course is to place the output of each of the directors in a broad aesthetic and philosophical context, in a dialogue of cultures. A Tarkovsky's work will be considered as a whole, which means participants have to see his films before the classes start. This will allow us to analyze individual fragments in relation to the director's entire artistic heritage.
Apart from taking part in the discussions each participant will have to analyze a given (chosen) film fragment from a Tarkovsky film, of importance for the subject matter of the course.
As preliminary reading, I propose the issue of Kwartalnik Filmowy dedicated to the work of A. Tarkovsky (issue 9-10, spring-summer 1995).
Familiarity with A. Tarkovsky's films is required.
