During the course, the following topics will be discussed:
01. Introduction to the research on the nation and nationalism
02. The will of the people and political geography in Western Europe
04. The first attempts to develop the theoretical model of nation
05. The nation and the modernization of agrarian culture
06. The intelligentsia as a national culture-forming group
07. The nation as an imagined community
08. The nation before nationalism
Student workload:
Participation in classes in the classroom - 14 hours (0,5 ECTS)
Preparation of final essay - 76 hours (2,5 ECTS)

After completing the course, students:
[Knowledge:]
1) know and understand the concepts of sociological sciences and the social processes taking place in Europe and the world (K_W08 in relation to P6S_WG).
2) know and understand the concepts and norms of intellectual and industrial property protection (K_W19 in relation to PP6S_WK).
[Skills:]
1) can prepare a paper using appropriate terminology in European studies based on
appropriately selected sources (K_U08 in relation to P6S_UK).
Assessment criteria
The condition for admission to pass the subject is compulsory attendance during classes.
A student has the right to be absent 1 time in one semester, consisting of 14 class hours (fourteen 2-hour classes). At the beginning of the course, the teacher will instruct students on how to make up for the absence and complete what they have missed. The student's timetable overlaps do not excuse over limit absences.
Classes will be conducted in the form of a discussion on the subject of reading or material presented by the lecturer in the form of a presentation. Active participation in the discussion means substantive participation in the discussion during at least 50% of the classes.
The final mark is an arithmetic mean of two marks received in the following categories:
1. Active and substantive participation in classes (50%).
2. A final essay on a subject designated by the teacher (50%).

0% -49% - 2
50% -60% - 3
61% -70% - 3+
71% -80% - 4
81% -90% - 4+
91% -100% - 5
