Theology and Philosophy of History in the Middle Ages 3800-TFH24-M
The aim of the class is to get to know the basic ideas of Medieval reflection on the sense of history. We shall track especially the influence of Augustine’s „City of God” on Medieval political theology and the theology of history.
We shall take up the following issues:
- The reception of „De Civitate Dei” in the early Middle Ages
- The developement of Medieval apocalyptic literature
- The 12th century revival of theological and philosophical reflection on history (Rupert of Deutz, Honorius of Autun, Anselm of Havelberg)
- Joachim of Fiore and the new periodization of history
- The Franciscan successors of Joachim (the Spiritual Franciscans, Peter Olivi)
- Bonaventure’s philosophy of history, or the rereading of Augustine and Joachim

Knowledge:
– the student knows the main Medieval and modern concepts of the philosophy of history
– the student knows the specific Latin and modern languages terminology, used within the thematic scope of the seminar

– the student can singlehandedly analyse the texts read in the class
– the student can identify essential problems and research questions concerning the examined issues
– the student can formulate his/her own research propositions
Competence:
– the student is aware of the value of the European tradition of the philosophy of history
– the student can cooperate in a group, taking on different roles
Assessment criteria
Class participation; conversation checking the student’s knowledge of the issues presented during lectures
