Introduction to the oeuvre of J. W. Goethe 3700-KON18-CS
The proposed works offer a clear manifestation of important issues from Goethe’s worldview and aesthetics: praise of great individuality, the life of an artist, the role of art and its relation to existence, striving for complete education and wisdom.
This is a syllabus intended for students of humanities faculties and also students of German language and literature as well as anyone interested in learning about the German humanist tradition.
Based on a detailed analysis of works, some of the dominating features in the output of J. W. Goethe will be distinguished: praise of great individuality, the life of an artist, the role of art and its relation to existence, striving for complete education and wisdom.

Learning outcomes
Knowledge: K_W07: knowing and understanding the methods of analysing and interpreting products of culture in conjunction with tradition. K_W09: being familiar with the output of major early writers.
Skills: K_U02: being able to perform in-depth and extensive analyses of artistic texts using the appropriate research tools, and to present the results of this work.
Social competence: K_K08: understanding the importance of the cultural wealth and heritage of Europe.
Assessment criteria
Criteria: a student’s active participation in discussions and its evaluation (the degree of insight in analyses, formulation of interpretation hypotheses, the level of their justification and originality, use made of available literature, identifying the most important or characteristic elements of the problem and formal structure of a given text, analysing their function, the way they are used).
Methods: continuous assessment and a final graded oral test.
