Politics in contemporary art 3700-KON121-AL
Until recently, it seemed that the problem of artistic involvement in current social and political events in Poland is as intriguing, as it is marginal. The times of critical art, developing in the 1990s, are already behind us, and successive generations of artists, entering the artistic scene in the first and second decade of the 21st century, were characterized by a tendency to escapism and distrust of openly political gestures. In the face of the growing tension in the discussions about the Polish national identity and it's values, it is worth considering the consequences of this situation for art.
The question about contemporary forms of artistic involvement is also an opportunity to revise the idea of autonomy in art. Is it valid today and for whom is it important? What is the difference between the so-called "New conservatism" and critical art created under the wings of conservatives? How can one understand the term "avant-garde" today? Can we talk about the excluded group in art - just like in the Polish society today - which has been marginalized as a result of the transformation of the artistic field after 1989? In addition, as part of the course, we will focus on key attitudes and manifestos that frame the Polish discussion on engaged art, such as Applied Social Arts of Artur Żmijewski, and institutional critique, such as the Piotr Piotrowski Critical Museum.
As part of the classes, discussions are planned based on the readings previously proposed. The condition for passing is active participation in classes and preparation of short reports from reading, passed on before each class. The planned length of classes is 30 hours, conducted on a weekly basis.
