Introduction to the Literature of Modern Greece 3700-FN-2-WLGN
Description
This course aims to familiarize students with the most important events and trends of Modern Greek literature from the beginning till the first half of 20th cent. (mainly in Polish translations) and to give them the basic tools (research and interpretation methods) applicable to literary texts.
Topics
1. Introductory informations. Topics, select bibliography and other auxiliary materials (chronological tables, maps, manuals) description; grading assignements, .canon of readings presentation. Periodization of the Modern Greek literature.
2-3.* Three and a half millennia of the Greek language; Greek – the oldest living language in Europe (universality, territorial coverage, continuity or discontinuity, diglossia, "Greek linguistic question" – katharevousa v. demotic.
The fall of Constantinople in the eyes of witnesses and in Modern Greek literature.
Readings: Constantine XII Paleologue – Kazantzakis' drama (in Polish translation).

4. First Modern Greek literary production: Ἀνθη Ευλαβείας. Folk poetry – dhimotika thragoudhia (acritic cycle, ballades, etc.).
Reading: ALN II: Anthology of Modern Greek folk songs.
5. Greek Enlightement: Greek periodical "Ermis o Logios" and its contributors; A. Coray, K. Koumas.
Readings: Patriotic hymn by Rigas Feraios and poem Escape by Valaoritis .
6. The Greek revolution of 1821 in Modern Greek literature.
Readings: Odes by Kalvos; Hymn to Liberty by Solomos; Memoirs by Makriyannis; Loukis Laras by Vikelas.
7. Poets of the Heptanese School and of Phanariot school (readings in original and in Polish translation).
8. First Athenian School (1860–1890) – romanticism.
9. 19th cent. Greek prose.
10. New (Second) Athenian School (Palamian School) – the victory of demotic Greek.
Readings: cycle Patrides, The Grave, The King's Flute.
11. Two "Giants": Cavafy – The last Alexandrian; Kazantzakis – Modern Odysseus.
12. Modern Greek literature on the Asia Minor catastrophe; Karyotakis and the Lost Generation movement.
13. The Generation of 1930 (Seferis, Elytis).
Reading: three poems by Cavafy, Seferis and Anagnostakis.
14. The Second world war and domestic conflict in the work of some chosen writers (eg. Tsirkas, Chatzis, Ritsos, Anagnostakis).

Learning outcomes
Knowledge: student:
– has elementary knowledge about the historical periods and trends of Modern Greek literature and its genres;
– summarizes main (chosen) Greek literary legacy (poetry, prose, drama) from the fall of Constantinople (1453) till the 2 half of 20th cent. (mainly in translations into Polish by the course instructor);
– names the most important representatives of literary schools and trends;
– has elementary knowledge about the Modern Greek culture, sees its originality and specific characteristics (as eg. Turkish and Venetian influence; legacy of the Megali Idea; folk literature) in the context of Mediterranean culture in general;
Skills: student:
– is able to find and use all sorts of data to prepare essays and oral analysis of literary texts.
– analyses chosen literary works (poetry, prose, drama).
Social competences: student:
– realizes the limited extent of his/her own knowledge and skills and the need of lifelong learning.
– is able to organize properly his/her own work and appropriate workplace.
Assessment criteria
Final written examination (basic knowledge about Modern Greek literature and culture) and oral examination (familiarity with the canon of Modern Greek readings).
