Latin Paleography 3700-CSL3PLAC
Students will work on copies of late medieval manuscripts (Gothic writing) and early modern ones, mainly Latin ones, but also in vernacular languages (Polish, German, Hispanic or Italian – depending on their language competences), and to a certain extent also on incunabula and early printed books. They will also exploit multimedia presentations showing interesting sources and their most important elements. Their task will be to familiarize themselves with a typology and terms concerning the historical sources, features of various types of handwriting and a system of abbreviations (brachygrafia), and to read the source text based on this knowledge. They will receive the most important information in the field of codicology, diplomacy, chronology and methodology of scholarly editing medieval and early modern sources. They will improve their knowledge of Latin, becoming acquaintained with the characteristic features of medieval and modern Latin.
