Italian Seminar: Madness in Italian Literature 3700-CS2-2-K-WL2
The greatest revolution in psychiatry happened in the 20th century. It was Italy, where two main arguments supporting the hypothesis happened: the invention of electric shock therapy in 1938 and the Basaglia Low of 1978 closing the psychiatric hospitals. Various methods of madness treatment were also reflected by its various concepts as well as different ways, in which lunatics were perceived by the society.
We will follow “literary history” of madness: in the form of identity loss, mask, getaway or poetical resistance
against the signs of mental illness stigma.

Knowledge:
- has an organized, in-depth and detailed knowledge on madness from the point of view of literature, psychiatry and philosophy.
- understands the interrelations between cultural development and social transformations
Skills:
- can utilize the knowledge and methodology specific for various disciplines dealing with culture studies research, is aware of the interdisciplinary techniques’ potential
Social competences:
- in discussion, the students respect the opinions od their companions and uses substantive arguments
- understands the need to learn further and continue the education on 3rd degree studies
Assessment criteria
Based on activity during the course and based on the final credit test
