History of French culture
The topics will include: the formation of states on the ruins of the Roman Empire, the development of the knighthood as the main recipient of culture in national languages, the feudal and monarchic ideology. Romanesque art in France, the Gothic style and its variations. The special character of the French Renaissance (humanism), Italian influences, architecture and painting in Renaissance France. The impact of religious wars. Classicism in the context of absolute monarchy, the rationalism of Descartes. Culture and art at Versailles, the Revolution and the republican system, the Napoleonic era - France's institutional, academic, and cultural development, the Restoration and the Second French Empire, the development of Paris, technical progress; French colonial expansion and its influence on interest in exotic cultures, the Franco-Prussian war and the Third Republic. The development of fine arts, painting. World War I, the socialist movement, the wild 1920s-1930s, World War II, decolonization, the Fifth Republic, May 1968, and contemporary France.
History of Italian culture
The aim of the lectures will be a synthetic presentation of the ideas forming Italian culture of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque and Enlightenment. The seminars will be devoted to the selected artists and their works. The profile of the author, captured in the context of the era, as well as the problems of the work are usually presented by a speaker-student. Collective interpretation of selected texts is conducted by the teacher. Lectures on the Middle Ages will present religious ideas that form Benedictine and Franciscan spirituality as well as spiritual, mystical and socio-religious trends. Later on - elitist love culture and ideas that were alternative towards Christianity: naturalism and hedonism, pagan tendencies. The topics of the seminars will be: sacral art, Romanesque and Gothic art and selected pieces of art (eg. Giotto paintings) and literature (Kwiatki świętego Franciszka, poezja Iacoponego da Todi, pieśni popularne, Boska Komedia by Dante, love poetry of Trecento).
Topics of lectures on Renaissance humanism, Baroque and the Enlightenment:
- humanism as the ideological paradigm of the Renaissance culture;
- philosophical orientations of the Renaissance and post-Renaissance culture;
- classicism - the philosophical and aesthetic doctrine of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment;
- mannerism as a manifestation of the classical doctrine’s crisis;
- the crystallization of the new beauty in Baroque. Aesthetic and axiological pluralism of Seicento;
- the cultural border of Trento;
- ideological and aesthetic revisions of the 18th century.
Topics of the discussion sessions:
- the culture of old epochs between life (Giovanni Boccaccio), ideals (Francesco Petrarch) and eschatological visions (Dante Alighieri);
- social determinants of elite culture (Il Cortegiano) and popular (commedia dell'arte, folk forms of the carnival).

K_W01 - student has basic knowledge about the place and role of humanities in the ancient culture.
K_W02 - student knows the basic terminology of humanities and social sciences.
K_W03 - student knows the basic terminology in the field of literary studies and the history of art and theater in relation to the discussed era.
K_W05 - student knows the connections between humanistic disciplines involved in the study of literary, artistic and philosophical works and the rules of interdisciplinary.
K_W7 - student knows and understands the methods of analysis and interpretation of cultural products in connection with tradition.
K_W8 - student has ordered knowledge about the basic directions of philosophical and political thought in a historical and contemporary perspective as well as about artistic and literary styles of the discussed period.
K_W9 - student knows the most important creators of the Renaissance culture: philosophers, church people, theoreticians of the state and law, artists and writers.
K_W13 - student knows the basic methods of interpreting a literary and philosophical text.
In terms of skills
K_U01 - student is able to select and interpret information from text, iconography and electronic sources.
K_U02 - student is able to analyze and interpret philosophical, literary and artistic texts and present the results of their work.
K_U04 - student has basic research skills allowing him to formulate problems in the field of philosophy, literature and art.
K_U5 - student has the basic skills to use interdisciplinary methods and research tools.
K_U08 - student is able to present the results of an independent analysis of research problems in the form of oral, written and multimedia.
K_U9 - student is able to prepare written works: essay, scientific essay, reviews, scientific report.
K_U11 - student is able to independently analyze the written and oral text of scientific character in Polish and in one of the congress languages.
K_U13 - student is able to prepare a written and oral presentation, taking into account the recipients' needs.

K_K02 - student understands the principles and rules of teamwork.
K_K04 - student can organize and cooperate with a group.
K_K06 - student takes the responsibility for protecting the cultural heritage.
K_K08 - student understands the principles of tolerance and cultural differences.
Assessment criteria
Assessment methods and criteria
The following things are to be assessed during the course:
- regularity in preparing for the discussion, especially knowledge of the texts discussed;
- activity during classes;
- the substantive and formal level of the individual statement (paper or message).
- The final passing grade consists of the assessment of participation in the classes and the assessment of the written test in terms of knowledge, communication skills as well as linguistic-stylistic and spelling correctness.
