Intermarium: Central & Eastern European Geopolitical Strategy from the Middle Ages to the Present 3620-LIC2-WG-ICEE
What relevance does history have for modern geopolitics in East Central Europe? What do medieval alliances have to do with the 21st century regional cooperation formats? What lessons can we learn from pre-modern thinkers when it comes to modern geopolitics?
In this course, you will deepen your knowledge about the history of the “Intermarium” region. That is, the area ‘in between the seas’: namely, the polities located in the triangle of the Adriatic, Baltic, and Black Seas.
At the end of this course, you will possess an overview of the geopolitics of the (1) Anjou, (2) Jagiellonian and (3) Habsburg eras, (4) modern East Central Europe, the (5) First World War, (6) the ‘interbellum’ period and how it lead to the Second World War, the (7) postwar era and finally (8) contemporary 21st century East Central Europe.
This is a bachelor-level beginners’ course, suitable for 2nd year students. No prerequisite knowledge is required.
