Islamic Art in the Old Polish Culture 3600-PST-SIKS-OW
The course covers the following issues or groups of issues:
- historical background (relations between the Commonwealth and the world of Islam)
- chronology and routes of infiltration of Muslim art to the Old Polish culture and participation of oriental communities living in the Republic of Poland
- the ideological basis of the presence of Islamic art in the Commonwealth
- basic categories of products of Islamic art used in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
- imitation of Islamic art in the Commonwealth
- modern resources of Polish historical collections in the country and abroad.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course and confirming the achievement of learning outcomes, the student is able to:
Understand the character and main political and ideological tendencies in the relations of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth with the world of Islam, especially Ottoman Turkey.
Assess the character of oriental communities living in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and their role in the orientalisation of Old Polish culture.
Explain the features of Islamic art that distinguish it from European art, and also notice differences in the reception of Islamic culture of art between the society of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Western Europe.
Characterize the main branches of Islamic art used in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and identify its imitations produced in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
Identify representative elements of the Polish national style with an Eastern origin.
Identify the most important Polish collections of Islamic art and its most important monuments used in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
Assessment criteria
Evaluation as part of the knowledge written exam acquired during the lecture and on the basis of the recommended literature.

5.0 - very good knowledge of the material presented during the classes and on the basis of the recommended literature, very good reading in the literature on the subject, proficient use of the specialist methodology
