Term 2026Z:
The course offers a broad panorama of the history of Mongolia and Central Asia, spanning from the earliest traces of human settlement to the rise, flourishing, and fragmentation of the Mongol Empire. It focuses on the key political, social, and cultural processes that shaped the region, presenting Mongolia as an integral part of the wider historical landscape of Eurasia. The course discusses the major stages of civilizational development in Central Asia, beginning with prehistory and Bronze Age cultures, through the era of population movements and the dominance of nomadic steppe confederations, and culminating in the emergence of Mongolian statehood in the thirteenth century. Particular emphasis is placed on analysing the environmental, geopolitical, and economic conditions that determined the evolution of nomadic societies. An important component of the course is its synchronic approach to history, enabling students to understand how developments in China, the Turkic steppes, South Asia, or the Iranian world influenced transformations in Central Asia—and how Central Asian dynamics, in turn, shaped neighbouring regions. The course thus situates the history of Mongolia within a broad regional and intercultural context. The course combines lecture-based instruction with seminar-style discussion. Students gain knowledge of the political and social structures of nomadic societies, the relationships between steppe empires and sedentary civilizations, and the long-term impact of Mongol expansion on the history of Eurasia. The course provides a solid foundation for further study of the history, culture, and languages of Mongolia, as well as—more broadly—the historical development of Central Asia. |
