China-Korea. History of relations in the modern era 3600-KO-OW
A wide range of issues in the history of the Sino-Korean relationship in the past 600 years will be addressed during the course. These will include the events since the establishment of the Chinese Ming dynasty and the Korean Chosŏn dynasty. Among the issues discussed the implementation of the Neo-Confucian thought to Korea will be addressed and the introduction of political institutions of a Neo-Confucian state will constitute an important part of the course. The specific configuration of the Sino-Korean relationship will be addressed (as well as the importance of the various peoples of today's Northeastern China, like the Khitans, Jurchens - later Manchus, and Mongols to this relationship). The functioning of contacts between China and Korea within the context of the so-called tributary relationship model of relations will be discussed (including the sadae/shida rule) as well as the modes of adaptation of elements of Chinese political, spiritual and economic culture to the Korean cultural sphere.
The relations between Chosŏn and the Manchu Qing dynasty, which dominated politically Korea as its vassal after 1637 and ruled over China proper after 1644 will constitute the next block of the course. The important reevaluation of the previous historical character of the Sino-Korean relations and the reduction of the role of the China-Korea-Manchuria triangle precipitated by the Ming-Qing transition will be stressed in this part of the course.
An important topic addressed in the later part of the course will be the processes of civilizational and cultural change beginning in the second half of the 19th century brought to East Asia by the widening sphere of influence of the Western powers. The issues discussed in this section will include the intellectual and political reforms in both countries, the interconnections between these, the reevaluations of the mutual relations in this period, and especially before and after the Qing-Japanese war of 1894-95, and the emergence of national and nationalist discourses in both countries and the role of the Sino-Korean relations in this phenomenon.
The section of the course devoted to the developments in the 20th century will include topics such as the relations between late-Qing China and the Republic of China after 1912 and Japanese-occupied Korea, the cooperation between Chinese and Korean intellectuals, nationalists and revolutionaries aimed at battling the Japanese threat, the activities of the Korean emigration circles in China (e.g. the Korean Provisional Government in Shanghai, the relations between the Chinese and Korean nationalist and communist movements), the mass immigration of ethnic Koreans to Manchuria and the contemporary situation of the Korean minority in China, the relations during the Sino-Japanese war of 1937-45 and the Chinese Civil War.
The part of the course dealing with the post-1945 and post-1948 eras will include discussions of the relations between the People's Republic of China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea, and between the Republic of China (on Taiwan) and the Korean states. The history of the Korean war as a historical drama influencing the relations in the quadrangle composed of the two Chinese and two Korean states will be an important issue in this section.
The course will close with lectures on the current state of affairs in the relations between the four states with a special emphasis on the relations between the PRC and the two Korean states, as well as on the contemporary cultural interflows between the Chinese and Korean cultures.
