The role of gestures in communication in non-European cultures 3600-KM-RGKKP-OG
The course discusses the role of gestures in communication using the example of non-European cultures. Students will be introduced to basic terms relating gesture studies and will learn basic types of gestures. The examples of the use of gestures presented by the lecturer will come mainly from Sub-Saharan Africa. Students will be asked to share their knowledge of the use of gestures in relation to a selected region of Asia or Africa depending on the language they are learning or the region they are particularly interested in.
The students will be obliged to prepare several tasks before attending the class - reading few articles, prepering a short presentation concerning a chosen type of gestures and finding a film showing the use of some gesture in a non-European culture
