Socio-cultural issues of Japan 3600-JA-ZSKJ2-OW
The purpose of this course is to equip students with a basic understanding of Japanese culture and society, as well as to show them a geographical and regional variety of Japan. A wide range of issues will be introduced in each class.
The first semester will be devoted for presentation main problems of Japanese geography, including both physical and social component. The listeners will also acquire elementary knowledge of Japanese map reading.
The second semester covers topics concerning the culture of every day life in Japan, including: conventional rules of behavior (reigi sahō), the history of culinary culture, aesthetics of Japanese cuisine, Japanese family, system of education, corporate culture, employment system, annual events and festivals, rite of passages, use of leisure time, Japanese music (j-pop, enka) and-mass communication and publishing.

Assessment criteria
-written exam after semester I and II
-required presence, admissible 2 unexcused absences per semester, 4 per year.
