Japanese Literature(Z) 3600-JA-LJ1-OW
The lecture aims to familiarize students with the history of Japanese literature and its cultural and social contexts from the time of acquiring Chinese writing and Buddhism in the 6th / 7th century to the end of the 19th century.
In the presentation of the ancient epoch (Nara, 8th century), particular attention is paid to the development of poetry collected in the Man'yōshū anthology and myths written in the chronicles. In late antiquity (Heian epoch, 9th-12th centuries), a court tale (especially Genji Monogatari, 1008), literary diaries, and imperial anthologies (Kokin wakashū, 905) are distinguished.
In the Middle Ages (12th-16th centuries), war stories are distinguished (Heike Monogatari,? 1240), the poetry of the Shinkokin wakashū anthology, 1205), while in the modern times (17th-19th centuries), social conditions for the popularization of literature will be explained. Among the numerous writers of the era, attention will be paid to the works of Ihara Saikaku, Matsuo Bashō, and Ueda Akinari.
