Chanoyu II (The Japanese Way of Tea 2) 3600-JA-CHJDHII-OW
The course concerns the phenomenon of chanoyu in Japanese history and culture. The topics discussed will cover both the material and immaterial aspects of the way of tea, its arts, esthetics, and philosophies. Preparing presentations and taking part in discussions about issues that will include: the development of chanoyu culture, the evolution of Japanese esthetic principles and examples from within the tea culture (architecture, ceramics, calligraphy, lacquer, etc) and how those examples can be physical representations of the ideals contained within the way of tea. During the course we will study the relations with zen Buddhism and other traditions of religious-philosophical thought and how all the afore mentioned aspects influence individuals and their social interactions. Students will get more familiar with classic texts of the way of tea as well as modern articles dealing with this field. They will also have a chance to polish acquired basic skills of a tea practitioner.

Learning outcomes
The students will be able to present, using the vocabulary of this field, the basic issues of the Japanese Way of Tea, its history, aesthetics and philosophy. They will also experience tea in its traditional environment practicing on tatami mats, which enables them to become more familiar with Japanese traditional space. They can act according to the guests' etiquette during a tea gathering, it is easier for them to enter Japanese traditional culture environments and they do so with deeper awareness. The necessity to learn from their older more experienced colleagues develops the ability of cooperation and communication. Class calls for particular concentration and physical and mental effort, therefore it hardens the spirit. The nature of the Way of Tea also awakens openness towards the other, empathy, mutual understanding and the notion of mutual ties.

Grade criteria:
1. Final written test
2. Practical assessment (in a form of a tea gathering)
3. Personal essey in Japanese (in exceptional cases in English)
4. Continuous assessment (being prepared and active during classes)
5. Attendance control (permitted two self-authorised absences per semester)
