HISTORY OF INNERASIA AND MONGOLIA (PART 2, XX-XXI cent.) 3600-HASMXX-OW
The course presents the major political, social, and cultural processes that have shaped the history of Central Asia from the period of Manchu domination to the present day. It examines the transformations occurring in the region against the backdrop of synchronous developments in neighbouring areas — including China, Russia, Tibet, the Far East, and the Turkic world — highlighting the mutual influences and interdependencies that defined the historical trajectory of Mongolia and its surroundings.
Students become acquainted with the key stages of Mongolia’s political, social, and cultural history from the eighteenth century to the end of the twentieth century, analysing both internal dynamics and external factors that influenced the evolution of Mongolian statehood. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the mechanisms of imperial control exercised by Manchu China, the dynamics of Sino‑Russian rivalry, the emergence of the modern national movement, the people’s revolution, and the systemic transformation at the end of the twentieth century.
